Bear-y New Horizons

‘Beary’ New Horizons

2020 has been a tough year for everyone. New challenges and new normals have arisen but that does not mean that we have lost all of the things we loved to do! There are still inspiring groups out there, new non-profits, new foundations, and new ways we are still being inspired and encouraged. One such inspiring family in Birmingham Alabama has decided to take their time in quarantine to create a nonprofit in honor of their daughter Libby, who loves music and is quadriplegic. Her parents have been inspired by her joy and smile when she hears music, and have decided that they want to help financially support other families who are raising children with disabilities. You can read more about their story here (and I recommend you do -  it's a beautiful story!)  Libby's family received a settlement from the hospital which has allowed them to have the therapy and equipment that Libby needs. Their nonprofit, Libby’s Friends is only in Alabama right now, but they hope to be able to expand to the rest of the nation soon!

Inspiration is Everywhere

And they aren't the only ones who have become inspired by the people in their life. Recently featured on abc news, Alexis Dung (19) and Trinity Jagdeo have turned their friendship into an inspiring story for others! Alexis met her best friend, Trinity Jagdeo,  in kindergarten over 10 years ago, and changed her life. Alexis has spinal muscular atrophy, which affects her physical strength. Trinity realized her friend did not have the support she needed in the entertainment industry. Trinity notes that during one of her friend's hospital stays, where she often keeps herself entertained with TV,  Alexis didn’t have anybody like her on TV to give her that extra support at the hospital. Trinity set out to change that. She made it her mission to bring inclusivity to the entertainment industry by founding her nonprofit, “From We Cant to We Can” and writing three children’s books featuring kids with special needs as superheroes. It is incredible that the friendship between these teens has created a nonprofit, children books, and a call to action for inclusivity to the entertainment industry.

Don’t Forget About Self-Care

As the struggles of remote learning are becoming more apparent, it’s important to make sure we are taking advantage of the resources that are available to us. One such new resource is the  Collaboration Center Foundation which has opened a new physical center in Las Vegas. They want to offer a network of families with special needs resources in education, recreation, therapy, etc. This is a wonderful resource for those who feel comfortable meeting small groups at a safe distance but not comfortable with letting their children return to crowded schools. Centers like these are a good resource, and can provide support not only for your child, but for you as well! As important as it is to  ensure your children and families are safe and thriving, it’s easy to forget about taking care of yourself when you're a parent. It is just as important to remember you need time to recharge as well. This article has some great advice on how you can take even a few minutes out of your day to take care of yourself so you can take care of your kids.
